Unexpectedly high PTT values after low-dose heparin prophylaxis.

چکیده
T hromboembolic (TE) prophylaxis using lowdose unfractionated heparin (LD-UFH), ie, 5000 IU given subcutaneously twice or 3 times daily is effective, has low bleeding risk, and is generally not expected to prolong partial thromboplastin times (PTTs). Laboratory monitoring or dose adjustments based on weight or renal function are not considered necessary. An index case at our institution prompted us to review this conventional view and investigate the frequency and circumstances when significant PTT prolongations occur in hospitalized patients receiving LD-UFH for TE prophylaxis.

Prevention of VTE in Nonorthopedic Surgical Patients
Background: VTE is a common cause of preventable death in surgical patients. Methods: We developed recommendations for thromboprophylaxis in nonorthopedic surgical patients by using systematic methods as described in Methodology for the Development of Antithrombotic Therapy and Prevention of Thrombosis Guidelines. Antithrombotic Therapy and Prevention of Thrombosis, 9th ed: American College of ...
متن کاملUnexpected hematoma due to heparin prophylaxis in transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap reconstruction
Prophylactic heparin came into widespread use after low dose or mini-dose heparin (low dose unfractionated heparin [LDUH]) was found to be effective in significantly reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, without major bleeding complications. This regimen is the standard for comparison with other methods, and it is the mainstay in moderate and high risk general ...
متن کاملEconomic analysis of low-dose heparin vs the low-molecular-weight heparin enoxaparin for prevention of venous thromboembolism after colorectal surgery.
BACKGROUND Low-dose heparin and low-molecular-weight heparin are effective strategies for preventing venous thromboembolism in colorectal surgery. The economic attractiveness of these 2 strategies in North America is unknown. We conducted an economic analysis of low-dose heparin calcium compared with enoxaparin sodium, a low-molecular-weight heparin, for thromboembolism prophylaxis after colore...
متن کاملProphylaxis of postoperative deep vein thrombosis: selective use of low-dose heparin in high-risk patients.
Administration of prophylactic low-dose subcutaneous heparin to prevent postoperative deep vein thrombosis is expensive, entails treating many patients unnecessarily, and causes some side effects. By using a predictive index a population of patients who are at particularly high risk of developing postoperative deep vein thrombosis may be identified preoperatively. Prophylaxis was given only to ...
متن کاملLow molecular weight heparin and unfractionated heparin in thrombosis prophylaxis: meta-analysis based on original patient data.
A meta-analysis (MA) based on original patient data has been performed comparing low molecular weight heparins (LMWH) with unfractionated heparin (UFH) in thrombosis prophylaxis after major surgical interventions. The analyses have been done for the following prespecified groups of studies: all studies, studies in orthopaedic surgery (OS) and studies in general surgery (GS, with further separat...
